The Sci-Fi Film genre started in short films in the silent film era, these usually lasted 1-2 minutes as the Sci-Fi genre was experimental at the time. These films were usually intended as comedy films and heavily relied on technological themes. 1902 spawned what is considered the very first Science Fiction film "Le Voyage dans la Lune" or "A Trip to the Moon" by director Georges Méliès. This is set in a spacecraft launched to the moon through a cannon. It drew upon Jules Verne and H. G. Wells (groundbreaking Science Fiction authors) in it's storyline and backdrops. Its ground-breaking special effects pioneered the way for future
science-fiction films, and it became largely popular after its release.
